Yes! Diet and lifestyle are a large part of reversing PCOS.
PCOS is characterized by numerous ovarian cysts that are usually benign. However, they interfere with normal ovulatory periods and complicate attempts at pregnancy. They result from an excess of pituitary Lutenizing Hormone (LH) in an attempt to promote ovulation. We often also see an excess of testosterone, and an imbalance in other hormones as well. Clinically, it is often seen along with with obesity, glucose imbalance, hirsutism (facial hair), acne, thinning hair, anovulatory periods (in which no ovulation occurs), and irregular period lengths.
Simply put, PCOS is the result of a poorly regulated ovulatory and menstrual cycle. We find that dietary and lifestyle factors contribute greatly. You can seek out high-fiber foods such as vegetables, whole grains, fruits, beans, and nuts. Get as many plant foods into your diet as possible. Avoid meat and sugar, flour, alcohol, and smoking as they contribute to unstable glucose control, hormone imbalances, and obesity. Also, avoid processed foods, as they detract from your nutritional status. Get more good essential fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6 like: high-quality fish oil, borage oil, safflower oil, walnut oil, flax oil. Avoid “bad oils” like saturated fats and hydrogenated oils/trans fats. One specific food that will contribute greatly is freshly-ground flax seed. Nutrients in this seed will help to balance your hormones, reduce your burden of dietary fats, and help bring your menstrual cycle into balance.
Regular exercise is an important part of glucose control, and therefore an important part of reversing PCOS. It is important for your mind and body to move regularly. Move your body! You can find creative ways to raise your heart-rate, while having fun and challenging yourself at the same time. Continually work to incorporate body-movement into your life and not only will your body be happy, but your mind will reward you with good feelings.
There are additional therapies such as botanical medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, naturopathic medicine and others that can help reverse PCOS. I encourage you to find a qualified, licensed professional that understands how to approach people as a whole, rather than in parts. Avoid gimmicks that include stimulants for weight loss, but instead find a program that will help control weight with real, whole, honest foods.
