by National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Mid Atlantic Chapter on Monday, May 17, 2010
Approximately 1,500 Charlotte area citizens joined the movement on Saturday, May 15, partnering with the National MS Society’s Mid-Atlantic Chapter to raise funds for programs, services, advocacy and research to benefit the 8,000 people living with multiple sclerosis in the Carolinas.

Participants stepped out against MS in a two- or four-mile walk starting in Charlotte’s Symphony Park. Walkers have until June 18 to turn in their final fundraising totals, for an anticipated $250,000 from the Charlotte event. Those who were unable or chose not to walk had the opportunity to participate in a limited-mobility yoga program designed to increase balance and flexibility in people living with MS. Free meals were also included; Panera Bread and Starbucks provided breakfast, and Golden Corral donated 1,600 hot dogs for lunch.

The Charlotte walk is the largest of 13 fundraising walks sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter in the state of South Carolina and 33 counties in western North Carolina. All together, the walks are expected to raise close to $800,000. Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating, unpredictable neurological disease causing symptoms that range from numbness and tingling to paralysis and blindness.
