What if you were living on borrowed time?
Edith Mitchell, a non-smoker, is fighting for her
life. When she was just 2 years old, she was diagnosed
with asthma, which worsened during her
final two years of college. Her allergy specialist
was able to treat her condition with medications
for many years until she was diagnosed with
bronchiectasis in 1999. This severely damaged her
airways. Doctors say a double-lung transplant is
critical to her survival, and she is currently on
Duke’s transplant waiting list.
Edith and Gary, her husband of 34 years have an
adult son who is married and has a daughter.
They are so happy to have a new grandbaby a
little girl named Keira. Edith loves to travel, garden,
take walks, hike, cook, sew and she looks
forward to having the energy to enjoy these activities
again. Edith relies on her strong faith to stay
optimistic and truly believes God still has big
plans for her life. She is grateful for the opportunity
to receive a second chance at life, and plans to
make the most out of every day she is given.
Unfortunately, Edith’s new life will come at a high
price.
Edith’s double-lung transplant is expected to cost
approximately $1 million. And, that is only the
beginning. Even with health coverage, she faces
considerable medical expenses related to her
transplant. She will require follow-up care and
daily anti-rejection medications for the rest of her
life. The cost of her monthly medications may be
as much as $5000, and these are as critical to her
survival as the transplant itself.
We must raise $100,000-$250,000 as soon as
possible to have the needed out-of-pocket expenses
covered before the transplant.
